Birding & Wildlife

GREAT AND SMALL

A Destination for Wildlife, KZN

As Gwahumbe is a relatively small reserve, it offers fantastic game-viewing opportunities. In addition to reserve size, relaxed game means ample chance to view natural behaviour in an exquisite setting. Gwahumbe is home to a variety of antelope including Nyala, Impala, Blesbok, Blue Wildebeest, Reedbuck, Kudu, Bushbuck, Grey Duiker, and the endangered Blue Duiker.

Giraffe, Zebra, Caracal, Large Spotted Genet, Serval, Black Backed Jackal, Porcupine, Cape Clawless Otter, Spotted Necked Otter, Thick-tailed Galago, Bush Pig and Warthog are also found on the farm. Hippos were re-introduced into Malinga Hippo Pool in 2000 – a first for the region.

BIRDWATCHING

Bring Your Binos for Bumper Birding

More than 240 bird species have been recorded at Gwahumbe – and our list was compiled by leading African birder, David Hoddinott, who conducts regular bird outings in the reserve. The diversity of habitat offers fantastic valley, bushveld, and savanna birding opportunities for casual birdwatching and passionate twitchers alike. Our ever-expanding species checklist includes forest species like the Trumpeter Hornbill and Narina Trogon, waterbirds, a range of grassland birds, and a variety of raptors. The latter includes the endangered Crowned Eagle, which is recorded to have bred in the valley for over 25 years. The endangered Ground Hornbill has also been recorded and is an always remarkable sighting.
