Wine and Wildebeest – The Perfect Pairing

Dawn slips over the horizon and there, on a nearby kopje, is a mighty nyala. He freezes, as if detecting danger, before a hadeda call startles him and he bolts.

It’s the break of a new day at Gwahumbe Game Lodge and Spa in Mid-Illovo, and life doesn’t get better than this.

For an extraordinary experience, or ‘wilderness on a whim’ away from the city, Gwahumbe is the ultimate destination. A mere hour from Durban, less from Maritzburg, and yet it feels like a lifetime away once you’re there.

The glorious reserve, with its achingly beautiful rolling hills and endless vistas, homes an abundance of birds, as well as wildebeest, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope species. Spot the ostriches with their gorgeous plumes as you enter the gates, and this welcome, including that from the friendly front office staff and knowledgeable game rangers, is a taste of what to expect.

But this is not just another game reserve. It’s a venue that invites others to enjoy its beauty and assets through innovative offerings.

For instance, who wouldn’t rather do an art course, under the guidance of a real artist, at Gwahumbe as opposed to in the city? Or be taught the intricacies of wine at a wine training/tasting course?  How about escaping for a 6 day transformational Health Retreat with well known Dr Kaz? And find one youngster who wouldn’t sign up for a junior rangers’ holiday camp at this splendid reserve . . .

Guests are accommodated in exquisitely tasteful units – the 6 to 8 sleeper Eagles Nest overlooking the most spectacular view, with its own private little rim pool is particularly popular – and up in the main lodge, there are comfortable lounges, a cosy bar and a patio and pool area, boasting scenic views.  A roaring log fire warms guests in the dining room, but you can also book a more intimate dining experience in the wine cellar. Not surprisingly, this is a desirable option for many!

In between activities, slip way to the fabulous spa, to the steam room or for a pampering treatment – or book a picnic lunch or a game drive with one of the experienced rangers. Your options are many.
