Nestled next to the Gwahumbe river, our Hippo Campsites offer the foundation for a true African camping escape. A stay at the campsites takes you into the heart of the valley and it’s untamed bush, providing privacy and peacefulness. It’s a treasure trove of exquisite bird and animals sightings with a flowing river that is put to good use on a hot summer afternoon.
Please Note: A 4×4 vehicle or vehicle with diff lock is required to reach the campsite.
Hippo Campsite Amenities Overview
Bush Campsite
The campsite has three sites, one of which has it’s own ablutions & kitchen area. The other two campsites share a kitchen area and ablutions. Bring your own tents and camping gear.
The Comforts are Provided
The basic comforts of hot showers (with wonderful views), ablutions, kitchen & braai areas and campfires are provided. There is solar lighting in both the ablutions and kitchen.
Get Out To Take It All In
There’s much to explore around the campsite, most of which can be done on foot. The transition to evenings are spectacular when enjoyed around a warm campfire, sipping on a sundowner and in great company.

Bush Camping in KZN
The Hippo Campsites are one of the latest additions to Gwahumbe and make for the perfect bush escape. While camping adds a little more ‘rustic’ to the adventure, our campsites are equipped with the basic comforts that make for an easy stay. With showers that look onto the river and large dedicated kitchen areas, it’s easy to settle in for the weekend. Accessible only by 4×4, ignite your sense of adventure from the moment you arrive. However, if you don’t have a 4×4, we can do transfers to and from the valley. Please contact us for more information. So if you’re seeking an authentic bush experience to go camping in KZN, our Hippo Campsites will sure bring you up and close with nature.
