What to Wear on a Game Drive

Feb 15, 2023 | Blog

We recently had the most wonderful group of ladies who visited Gwahumbe and came fully dressed for the occasion! They came sporting their new Dirt Road attire and really looked the part. We loved how excited they were for the game drive and had such fun showing them our piece of paradise.

But it got us thinking, for those who might be asking.. what to wear a game drive?
While this is totally up to you, we’ve put together some helpful tips for your next trip that could make it just that extra bit more enjoyable. A reminder that the weather in the game reserve can be unpredictable, so it’s important to check the forecast beforehand and to dress accordingly.

Comfortable Clothing

Comfort is key! Comfy clothing such as lightweight cotton, linen or synthetic fabrics that breathe well are great for the hot summer days. Avoid tight-fitting clothes, which can be uncomfortable and restrict movement. Long-sleeved shirts and pants are recommended (when it’s not too hot), as they can protect you from the sun, insects, and scratches.

Layer Up

Layering up is a must… temperatures can vary during the day, so it is a good idea to come prepared with multiple layers to add on if needed. Start with a t-shirt or vest, and add a lightweight jacket or fleece as needed. Don’t forget to bring a hat and gloves for early morning or late afternoon drives, when it can be colder.

Footwear

Our suggestion for footwear would be comfortable closed-toe shoes. If you’re going on a guided walk during your game drive, we would suggest supportive shoes or hiking boots. Avoid sandals, flip-flops, or any open-toe shoes that can expose your feet to insects, dust, and dirt.

Neutral Colours

Game animals are sensitive to bright colors and so wearing something a little more neutral such as khaki, green or brown will help you blend in with the natural environment and increase your chances of spotting wildlife.

Accessories

Sunglasses are a fantastic accessory to protect your eyes from the sun and dust. And lastly, even though these aren’t clothing items, they’re even more necessary for an enjoyable day out on the reserve… – don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

In conclusion, what you wear on a game drive is crucial for your comfort, safety, and enjoyment. Dress comfortably, in layers, and wear neutral colors to blend in with the environment. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring accessories like sunglasses, a scarf, sunscreen, and water. By following these tips, you’ll be ready for an unforgettable game drive experience at Gwahumbe Game Reserve.
