The Newest Members of the Gwahumbe Family.

The Gwahumbe family continues to grow! Last month we acquired two new zebra stallions from different areas. The first to arrive had hardly any shadow stripes and two weeks later when the second joined us, we noticed he was the complete opposite and had very dark shadow stripes. Zebra’s stripes are unique to themselves and are as distinctive as human fingerprints. When they are born, their stripes are a red-brown colour and slowly become darker and change to black as they grow. It’s thought that the mix of black and white stripes cause confusion for any predators, such as lions, and makes for a great camoflauge. A group of zebras all gathered together always looks quite spectacular, or dazzling, should we say (if you didn’t catch it, a group of zebras is called a dazzle 😉 ).

These 2 new members have quickly become best friends and we’re so glad they’re settling well into the Gwahumbe life. If you see them on the reserve, do stop to have a look at their contrasting colouring – it’s quite unusual.

A reminder that day visitors are welcome to bring their 4×4’s for a self game drive. A stop at one of our beautiful picnic spots makes for the perfect lunch time stop along the way. If you don’t have a 4×4, we offer guided game drives with snacks and drinks. Take a look here for more info on experiences you can enjoy at Gwahumbe: https://www.gwahumbe.co.za/experience-gwahumbe/
