The Beauty of a Winter at Gwahumbe & Winter Game Drives

May 24, 2022 | Accommodation, Activities & Events, Blog, Spa

Gwahumbe is a game reserve near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and if you know the area, you’ll know that winter holds some of the most glorious days here. The mornings and evenings can have a cold chill to the air – but midday can warm up with highs of around 24 degrees and can we agree that there’s just something special about ‘thawing’ out in the sun on one of our winter game drives.

1. Winter Game Drives

During winter, the foliage density of the plants is significantly reduced, allowing the ease of quickly glancing through large stretches of the bush. This means the chance of viewing wildlife is greatly increased.

2. Less Rainfall

Winter in KwaZulu-Natal means less rainfall than during the summer months. With less rain, comes less likelihood to be drenched during a game drive or walk. Due to the reduced rainfall, you may even get the opportunity to see more animals, as they tend to spend a lot more time together around rivers and waterholes during the colder months.

 3. Sunrises & Sunsets

African sunsets, especially during the winter months, are some of the most spectacular in the world! The dry winters mean that there is generally more dust in the air, which makes for these rich red, purple & orange tones that paint the sky most afternoons.

 4. Starry Night Skies

If you’re adventurous enough to brave the chilly breeze of a winter night, then you could be greeted with an incredible view of the stars. The clear evening skies make for a memorable stargazing experience.

 6. Romantic Dinners at the Hydrobath

Lastly, we must mention the private dinners with a hydrobath at our spa. Nothing screams winter quite like a delicious, hearty meal shared over candlelight, sipping on bubbly, and hopping into a warm bath to end the night off. It’s the perfect mix of escaping to the slow-paced lifestyle of the bush, while seamlessly enjoying some of the finest luxuries in life.
